I followed this writeup on e38.org by
cyclops.

By pushing the clips off the end of the ball rather than prying outwards, there was no need to remove the plastic shield on the RHS. I also found that there was already grease in the mounting points so followed his instructions to ensure it was spread adequately on the pins.

Simple DIY with excellent results.
