1. Copy all the files from an OS CD to your PC hard drive.
Well, you can bin the Mk2C Mk2M langMk2 and the V_2 directories. You don't need them for Mk3.
You can probably bin more but I didn't bother.

2. Locate the usw_load file - this contains the text and graphics for the nav system.
My file was in Mk3116BMWC01Sapp_sw
You'll note there are 4 x directories under Mk3. My car loaded the 0116 files. But if you're not sure which dir your car will load, change all usw_load files.

3. Use NavTweak and edit the usw_load file the way you like.
NavTweak is here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/8925524/navtweak.zip.html
I used NavTweak v2.6
I also changed some of the menu text to the way I like it :-)

4. Use a hex editor and edit the software version to be greater than what you had before, or to 0000 to get so-called "wild" release to force upgrade. I made v6.40
Change version in first 4 bytes of...
sw_rel.tbl
lng_rel.tbl
...both located in Mk3116BMWC01S directory

5. Make a new CD image with all the modified files.
Here's the important part:
You must make a Mode2/Form1 image. This is CRITICAL.
Most CD burning programs make Mode 1 images
The Mk3 cannot boot from a Mode 1 image, it MUST be Mode 2
Try and boot from Mode 1 and it will go into an endless loop, leaving you struggling to get the CD out.

I used mode2cdmaker, modified to write the correct TOC.
Volume must be called NAV_SW
I will post this modified version soon.

Command line was
mode2cdmaker.exe -o "image" -v "NAV_SW" -e "dat" -ccd -f
I used m2cdmgui.exe (UbiK mode2cdmaker GUI v1.6)

6. Burn a new CD-R with the image. Don't bother with CD-RW, the Mk3 nav cannot read them.
Burn at the SLOWEST speed and verfiy you have a 100% burn afterwards.
Mode2 has much less error correction than Mode1, a verification is important.
I used ImgBurn because I can verify the burn afterwards.
Get it here: http://www.imgburn.com/
ImgBurn also shows that the image is MODE2/FORM1 - check it!

None of my discs were 100% but I only had a total of 9 errors so I tried them :-)
Make sure you can read the discs in your PC.

7. Go to the car, ignition at first position (radio on etc), wait for nav to boot up, then remove map CD, and insert new OS CD.
Wait for system to load new software.
Do NOT turn ignition off until reload and reboot has been completed.

8. Enjoy!

Tips:
If your Mk3 cannot read the CD, it'll go into an endless loop.
To eject the CD, turn ignition off, wait a couple of minutes, then turn on and keep pressing the Eject button, until the CD comes out.
Then try again with a good Mode2/Form1 CD

Voila!
