Subject: help us eliminate the battery as the problem by UNLOCKING your OBC...

Here' are the instructions: http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/260614/

Once the OBC is unlocked...you can perform TEST #9. Do it with the engine NOT running and then report back the voltage reading you get from your battery.

If the reading is consistantly between 11.8v-12.8v ...then the battery is fine. If the battery consistantly reads between 10.8v-11.8v ...then the battery is probably the culprit.

When the battery voltage on the e38 is at 11.89 volts...the battery's "state of charge is at 0%".

A weak or dying battery will create weird electrical gremlins as it goes thru a kind of "rolling brown out"...which may be the reason various unrelated warnings lights are going on/off and the sound system is acting strange.

But we need to isolate some common problems...which the battery is the easiest to identify. A bad ignition switch can do the same...but again, the battery is easier to rule out.

(note the table below of the battery's charging state vs voltage)
