I have been fiddling around with the system and found that if I jump into the car without giving the nav system any "wake-up" time, the reversing camera comes on initially but then switches off when the nav system activates.

I also hooked up my trailer today (the main reason I fitted the reversing camera) and surprise, surprise - the camera didn't work at all. It seems that the electrics of the BMW towing hitch disable the reversing lights when a trailer is attached! I will now run a wire to the cabin to take pin 17 to ground and turn that ^$^&%# camera on when I need it on.
