Someone had a great suggestion to drain some fluid, remove the upper hose and insert a small rag inside to catch the pieces as you pull out the nipple. You do NOT want plastic and other crap getting picked up by your water pump and causing an issue down the road.

I would highly advise anyone to ensure they got all of the small pieces out.
