RE: From here
We did the exact same thing 30 years ago when lead was 'outlawed' and we still see the argument for leaded fuel. While it turns out the alternative was possibly not the best solution the lead was indeed a bad thing... no matter what proponents would like us to believe.
Now we discover that most octane enhancers used as replacements as well as the oxygenates have serious health and environmental risks.
And we turn to other alternatives. So I understand your shell game analogy.
I've never been a fan of mandated change but here in Canada E5 and E10 have been a choice for over 25 years and I know of no concrete plans to mandate either a 5% or 10% blend. Our 'new' Conservative Prime Minister has backed out of Kyoto and spoken of implementing blended gasoline as the alternative.
I don't agree with the views on climate change. Black or white. One side states we are destroying the planet while the other argues we are not. The fact is we are. Possibly not to the extreme the environmental movement would have us believe but we are having an impact. While I don't drink recycled urine, wear hemp clothing, or live in a sod hut I do try to do my best with the tools I have at hand to lessen my impact. Much like the typical Christian doesn't live his or her life by the literal words in the bible I have to make a living and enjoy my 80 years on this planet. It's a different world out there and we can only do what we can... but ignoring the issue or belittling it is simple denial.
I KNOW E10 can lessen the impact my gas guzzling vehicles have yet I'm not willing to give them up. Does that make me a hypocrite? Of course. But aren't we all? ...like our Prime Minister, and indeed your administration, for acknowledging the problem on one had but denying it on the other.
