Subject: I know little of chemistry, it's one of the few things on this planet

I no interest in, but I understand what you are saying. The important factor in this is the physical force developed by the chemical reaction.

Since we are talking about substances that burn to produce their energy, and the means by which this energy is harnessed is the same, I really have a difficult time seeing any possible ways that ethanol can overcome its efficency defficency over gasoline. That doesn't mean I won't be suprised in the future, but I'm not holding my breath.

My big problem with ethanol is that it is forced on us by government, who markets it as a eco-friendly alternative. In reality, it is an expensive transfer of funds to the politician's supporters. I don't know the situation in Canada, but in the US taxpayers subsidize over half the cost of production. This gives the illusion at the pump that ethanol blends are cheaper, but in reality they are not. At present time, ethanol is a shell game played by politicians & political lobbying groups.

Of course, the technology may advance to a point where ethanol becomes truly viable, but that advancement cannot be mandated.

Now I'm about to write about economics & philosophy, so for the mercy of the readers, I'm going to stop here!
