I'm not sure what steps are required to open the heater box. Having recently completed a heater box rebuild on our '86 735i (E23), I can say that there are certain similarities. You might be able to pry open the heater box cover, but it would be a PITA. On the E23, we finally decided the best way was to go ahead and remove the entire dash. That proved to be time consuming, but not all that difficult.

If you undertake a heater core replacement, please take plenty of photos and document your work here as I'm certain that everyone would find it very interesting and useful.
