just FYI info I've gathered over the years for when the topic of an in-dash CD unit comes up.

If your car was mfg'd after 9/98...then you can easily swap in the CD43, C43, C33 radio units (these units are single DIN size wise...and fit directly in the space where the cassette/radio unit now resides in the non nav e38s). The CD43/C43/C33 units were in the e36 & Z3...the units from the e46 do not fit...their face is too long and has a slant that only fits the e46 (like the CD53 you posted). You also posted a European unit that would probably work in a post below...but it was also a single DIN unit...(them lucky Europeans get all the toys!).

All of the units below will have an OE "look" (match the BMW surronding displays) and will operate the CDC because they communicate with it over the I-Bus. 95-9/98 e38s aren't as lucky because their CDCs communicate over the M-Bus) You can also connect an mp3 player/iPod with some of the aftermarket connectors from Denizon/iCruze/Blitz safe/Ice Link thru the CDC (10 pin) connector on the rear of the unit (you do loose the trunk mounted CDC, though...but who needs all the CD skipping and antiquated technology if you are upgrading to using an iPod, right?) 8-)

As far as aftermarket amps etc...you are way beyond my comprehension...so I'll go with...I, I, I, uhhhhh......don't know? 8-)

DSP...here again, I'm not sure what happens. I do know someone who installed a BMW Traffic Pro nav unit (that's a whole 'nother story)...and they had DSP. They informed me that they did loose DSP manipulation...but the unit still worked. Whatever the DSP setting was...is how the system remained...so if you keep DSP...set it how you like it before retrofitting.

CD43 single in-dash CD/radio unit:

C33 cassette/radio unit with WeatherBand:

C43 Cassette/radio unit w/PTY/RDS (no WeatherBand):

CD43 installed in an E38 (without DSP):

And to those they may be wondering...YES...the cover will close over the units...if you check yours...you will see that there is space behind the cover when it is closed...so the radio units knobs do not restrict the cover from closing completely. 8-)
