The glass lenses on the foglights can become extremely pitted over time. You don't really notice how bad they are until side-by-side with new ones.

The photo below shows the difference between the foglight I removed from my '97 740iL (100k miles) and the new replacement ($93 each from Vines Auto). Too bad we can't just get the glass lenses like on the headlights.



To keep the glass looking new, I suggest applying urethane shields such as those from BavAuto or X-pel.
