I was working in the New Orleans jail when Katrina hit. We had 69 deputies in the building guarding 700 inmates and 168 civilian family members we had grouped on the second floor. Floors three thru nine were detention floors, tenth floor was the medical clinic and psych block.

When the backup power finally failed, about half of the deputies quit on the spot and joined the civilians. My supervisor explained to us all that if the inmates on the upper floors got out and made it downstairs, they would either kill these people or take hostages.

The deputy that was assigned with me to my floor was one of them that quit! And then I accidentally got locked on the sixth floor! No way out, no communications, no power at all. The inmates were screaming and rattling the bars trying to force the cell doors open to break out. Nobody was coming to unlock those doors until morning.

I took one of the four dry-chemical fire extinguishers and a broom handle and I sat up there on that floor for 12.5 hours not knowing if I was going to be alive the next morning. I stayed, did my job, and I didn't quit or panic. I did what I was supposed to do, and had a reputation for being fair but no nonsense.

Law enforcement comes in all stripes, colors, and varying levels of dedication to their job. I can't do anything about the ones that don't give a fuck, but I can say this: somebody driving like a fucking maniac on a public highway has no excuse to bitch when he gets caught, no matter how much of an asshole he thinks the cop was. If you get your ass nailed, take your lick like a damned man, don't be an asshole about it, and if you think it was unfair, fight it in court.

What I have a short fuse for is pricks like that painting ALL cops good and bad with the same ugly brush. You've got good people and you've got bad people. Some are wearing a badge and a gun, some aren't. But just because you happen to get stuck with an asshole isn't a license to be a prick also! Like I said, take your lick and your ticket like a man, and if you got a problem with it, fight it in court.

Nuf said!
