Here's a couple tips in addition to what you find at e38.org in regards to the recirc filters.

Passenger side: Just reach up there and pull the filter cover and filter itself out. There's no need to replace the whole filter housing.

Drivers side: I had to replace the whole housing here. I only removed the plastic plate above the pedals and reached up there. It took about 20 minutes and a lot of curse words, but still better than taking apart the whole dash.

I'm not familiar with the gurgling noise (luckily). I do hear the vents switching all the time when in auto mode.

Yes, they are aftermarket M-par's.
