this was always a concern w/E38 owners if a unit with knobs would hinder the cover from closing. But it turns out that there is a slight curve in the cover which allows it to close over units with knobs that don't protrude too far.

Here's some pics of an E38s with the BMW CD43 (in-dash single CD/radio) from the e36 & Z3 installed in place of the original e38 cassette tape unit...and the cover closes over the knobs. (BTW, these units also work in the e34/e32 just like the BMW Traffic Pro...but you lose the use of the CD changer since they need I-Bus changers...and the e34/e32 use the M-Bus CD changers).
