Subject: How to remove rear ABS hub

Right,

The best place to start is to get the rear on the car as High as possible and on axial stands. Remove road wheels.

You don't need to remove the rear brakes unless you are replacing the bearing, which you may not have to do. Before you remove the wheels, check for any play and grumbling noise coming from the bearing. This is also a good time to strip the brakes down and clean up.

You need to remove the 8 or so allen bolts going on to the ABS hub, then just lift and tie up the shaft out the way.

That's the easy bit out the way . This is where it can be a sod. In the hub there is a 35mm nut that has a locking tab over it which is what makes it so difficult to remove, being on the ground, there is not a lot of space to move. With a bar to get your M8 or the better part to stand with your foot break wile you try and turn off the nut (good luck you'll need it) saying that if you have a good air gun it will come of with ease The size socket you will need is 35mm not 36mm. It is a tight fit and may need a tap on the nut. Also make sure you get a new locking tab from BMW to go over when you are done.

Once you have the nut off you will need a puller to remove the ABS hub. This can be well stuck on so don't be afraid of it seeming too tight to pull off.

Now that you have it off it is a good time to replace the ABS sensor, as you can get to it with ease. Now just re-fit in reverse order, replacing new locking tab over the top of the nut knocking down over it. You will see how when you remove.

If you need to do the bearing you will now need to strip down the brakes, remove the rotor and get a good strong slide hammer on to the hub. I am not sure how it will come apart, whether the bearing will be on the hub on the carrier, but you will soon see when you have the outer hub off.

I hope this helps sorry if it is no good
