on the floorboard, so I cleaned them with a wire brush and painted them with Rustoleum. You can see the white areas on the floorboard, which is because someone at Wal-mart thought it would be funny to switch the black caps with white ones on the spray cans, but I digress...

It sounds like we're doing a lot of the same work. I'm happy to share any information and answer questions. I took LOTS of photos along the way, which can be helpful. Yes, if you've got the dash out of the way, go ahead and replace the vacuum lines and the vacuum actuators in and around the heater box. I would recommend removing the heater box, too, so that you can replace the vacuum actuator underneath it, replace the heater core and actuator inside it and, finally, install a new gasket between the heater box and the firewall. That's a lot of work, but you don't want any water leaking in on your new carpet and you certainly don't want to have to go back in there later because of a $20 gasket.

Also, replace all of the gaskets, rubber grommets and hoses that pass through the firewall, especially the hose for the heater valve on the passenger side.

I didn't see any rust spots on the firewall.

Good luck! Take lots of photos and keep us posted of your progress!
