Subject: Few non-bimmerheads would want that car, so it's market value

isn't much. You didn't specify the mileage, so I used a test case with 80,000 miles on kbb.com, which reported a range of $1,025 for fair condition, to a maximum of $1,600 for excellent condition. Those are private-party values. It sounds like the actual value is even lower, though, due to the poor condition of the interior and it's lack of use.

I'm not familiar with the turbo diesel used in the 524td, but BMW diesels are reputed to be quite good (and somewhat rare). I'd guess that an enthusiast would like the car for a project, but your friend will likely be hard pressed to get more than a few hundred dollars for it in it's current state from any other type of buyer.

Good luck and let us know what happens. Personally, I hope the car finds a good home with someone who will restore it. They're getting harder and harder to find.
