The E31 is equipped with a two-wire serial data bus based on CAN. BMW called it the "I Bus". Various controllers are connected in a star network and communicate via a moderately high-speed serial digital data stream. The electronic body module (EKM) provides, among other functions, the interface between the outside world and the I Bus.

The bus' physical layer is an open collector setup pulled high (+12v) by the bus, and pulled low by the talker.
Specifically, 9600 bps, 8 data bits, Even parity, 1 stop bit.
