I had a 2001 740i; - terrific car. In april 2003 I traded it in for a 2003 745i.

The 745i sucked for the following 6 reasons:
1. Stupid ignition key , actually a fob. It frequently didnt go in right and I got error maessages telling me the car was disabled ( it was ), and to contact the dealer immediately.
2. Stupid seat controls, you had to push buttons to tell a small round knob what you wanted moved; thenyou turn or slde a knob in various directions s to make things happen.
3. Stupid gear shift; a little stalk on the column frequently mixed up with the wiper stalk.
4. Stupid cruise control; - with 6 preset speeds that I never knew which one it would set on.
5. Stupid grossly complex iDrive; - even the dealer couldnt figure all the functions.

I kept this car for only 7 months and luckily was able to sell it to a private party for a not too big loss. Then I bought a 2004 545i which has eliminated ALL of the 5 problems above, rides and handles as well or better, and cost $15000 less.
