1/16" wire may be a little too stiff. It needs to have enough spring to slip over the traingular catches when assembled. You could force it out with screwdrivers when assembling, but I found on assembling the frame back into the panel that it is MUCH easier to leave the front piece out of the cupholder until finished, then push it into the holder assembly. The wires have to spring to the sides to do this. My 0.051" dia. wire seemed to be about as large as I would want to use. My guess is the 0.040-0.050" is about the right range.
