It was wire I already had around. Being an engineer, ex tool maker, etc, and somewhat of a packrat, I have lots of sundry items in my garage.

You want wire that is not so hard it cannot be bent into a pretty sharp 90 degree bend, but not so soft that it will straighten out if the cupholder is forced (as in a too large cup being pushed down into it).

Safety wire, or the soft tie wire available in auto supply stores, or wire used for re-bar tying is probably too soft, as it is meant to be easily twisted.

Music wire will work, but harder to get sharp bends in it.
