The IDIOT that had put it on rounded off the nubs on the back of the filter usisg a wrench on it. The cannister itself tore and twisted off, but the base was still attached and wouldn't move. A friend came over with a wierd looking tool-a cross between channel locks and vice grips- that he got from the Snap-on man.It managed to grip the lip of the filter(by this time there was only about 1/2 inch left of it)and after a couple of hard tugs, it finally came off. I don't care what it costs, I'm getting me one of those!
